Saltwater Pearls: The Tears of the Sea

Material Knowledge

Saltwater pearls are born in the warm waters of Asia, especially in Japan, China, the South Sea islands and Vietnam. They grow in oysters that live in the open sea, washed by tides, moon cycles and the energy of the ocean. Each pearl is the result of a process that takes years: layer by layer, the oyster wraps its shimmering nacre around a tiny core until a jewel of unique beauty emerges. Saltwater pearls are known for their deep luster, flawless surface and luminous colors, from classic white to soft pink, silvery gray and mysterious black.

My Discovery

I sourced my pearls directly from Phu Quoc, Vietnam. The island is known for its traditional pearl farms, where the craft of pearl cultivation has been nurtured for generations. There I found pearls whose glow and depth touched me immediately, true treasures of the sea that are now part of my work at MayaMalou.

Historical Use

Pearls have been considered symbols of purity, femininity and love for thousands of years. In China, they were revered as "tears of the moon" and considered gifts from dragons. In Japan, pearls were sacred and were retrieved from the depths by Ama divers, women who dedicated their lives to the sea. Cleopatra is said to have dissolved a pearl in wine to demonstrate her beauty and power. Pearls adorned queens, accompanied wedding rituals and were worn as talismans for fertility and eternal love.

Energetic Meaning

Saltwater pearls carry the calming, purifying energy of the sea within them. They open the heart chakra, promote emotional balance and strengthen the connection to one's own femininity and intuition. Pearls offer inner peace, gentleness and a feeling of comfort. They remind us that true beauty comes from within and that something precious can emerge from irritation, a metaphor for transformation and self love.

Use and Significance

At MayaMalou, I use genuine saltwater pearls for selected TenderTools and jewelry pieces. Their silky, cool surface molds gently to the skin and brings a touch of luxury and elegance to every touch. Pearls are wonderful for elevating sensual moments and deepening the connection between body, heart and soul. Their natural shimmer makes every piece a timeless work of art.

Sustainability and Ethics

The pearls I use come from responsible pearl farms in Phu Quoc that focus on sustainable cultivation and protection of marine ecosystems. Every pearl is carefully selected and treated with respect for its origin. Pearls are a gift from the sea that takes years to mature and deserve to be treated with mindfulness and gratitude. This is how MayaMalou creates a cycle of love between human, sea and nature.
